Sleeping Sitting Up

Seamus's surgery was moved up to today--doctor's schedule, Chris's schedule, my schedule, Seamus's schedule all pointed to today as the best option.

The good news is that none of the bumps or lumps were cancerous. The bad news is he has stitches and "super glue" in various incision spots and apparently this is making it uncomfortable for him to lay down. I picked him up at 4:30, brought him home, fed him and then got him settled in bed (my bed, of course). Since then (a few hours now) he's been trying to sleep sitting up. Then he falls asleep, falls or moves down and boom! he's awake and sitting back up. I've been positioning pillows around him to get him some support so he can sleep and stay asleep. The photo is the particular set up that seems to work. He was asleep before I got off the bed to get the camera and is back asleep as I type this. I'm sure the pain medications helped. (I'm contemplating my own pain "medication" in a glass shortly...).

He's supposed to be wearing a cone (Elizabethan collar, if you prefer) because he has stitches on a back leg, but so far, he's not at all interested in the stitches. So I'm just going to let him rest, cone-less. It's been hard enough for him to find a position to sleep in, without having a plastic conehead hindering him. It's funny, he's right where he slept when I was going through chemo and sleeping a lot, and he was keeping me company. So I think I'll just keep him company now, too. That's how we roll in our cancer (free!!) house.

Poor baby. So glad Seamus is cancer free. Bernie and I hope he can get some rest. In Mommmy's bed, of course! :-)

Teresa, I'm happy to hear Seamus is cancer free! It's nice to get that surgery behind you earlier than expected. I hope he finds a comfy position to rest in. Do keep him company (as if you wouldn't!). Give him a gentle pat on the head for me. Hope you all get a restful weekend.

Poor fella! Hang in there, Seamus. My Basco & Ella (both in various stages of illness themselves) send you their doggy love.

Why The Title

I hate and refuse to read/ watch/ acknowledge any story involving a dog--because I love dogs and the dog in a movie/ book/ whatever always dies. I can't handle that.

When I found out I had cancer I said to Chris (writer, significant other; in case there is a soul reading this who doesn't know that) "If I die, given that Seamus lived, you have to write the memoir "The Dog Lived." I love the irony. Seamus (our beagle) was diagnosed with cancer more than 3 years ago and was told (okay, right, I was told; Seamus still doesn't know) that he would live maybe a year. Instead he's cancer-free and well into remission. That would be the great irony of my life story--the dog lives. I don't.

Not surprisingly, Chris was not amused and did not want to write that memoir. Oh, and my prognosis is not at all that grim. So instead, in a rare mood I'm attempting to just put a positive spin on things. The Dog Lived...and so will I.

For Those of You Over the age of 35

It seems we've learned the age cut-off for understanding how a blog works (i.e. Chris or younger = you get it). So here's a few hints:

1) if you are new to the blog you actually start at the bottom (scroll down) for the first entry and then work your way up.

2) if you want to leave a comment, click on the "# comments" phrase (it will actually say 0 or 1 or 6 ...an actual number) at the end of each post (okay, "article" if the word "post" was too bloggy for you). A window will open with the other comments and a box where you can type in your comment. You don't have to have an account. Just fill in the "Name/URL" with how you want to identify yourself and then click on the "Publish Post" button.
